SESSION ONE: How to develop long-term hosting strategies


The value of a sport event from the point of view of the hosting city or region can be measured through its economical, environmental and social impacts. To ensure positive effects requires a long term strategy with a good understanding of the opportunities and challenges of bidding and organising. International sport events are often complex. The first part of the Forum will introduce some long term strategies for host cities and regions and will present two concrete cases: Johannesburg (South Africa) and New Zealand.

SESSION TWO: How to define and maximise intangible benefits from hosting sporting events


The effects of hosting sport events can be tangible: increase of jobs, new revenues from ticketing or sponsorships,
construction & urban regeneration, more tourism activities; and also intangible: increase of civic pride, increase of
international reputation and progress in human capital. The second part of the Forum will present two additional cases
that will demonstrate what intangible benefits can be expected: Edmonton (Canada) and Athens (Greece).
